St. Joseph of Montvale is relentless.

It doesn’t care if it’s going up against a seven-footer on the boards, the Green Knights are going to get attack the glass and aren’t going to let up.

As a squad that often features five guards on the floor at the same time, it wouldn’t be shocking to see St. Joe’s get out-rebounded. However, it not only hangs with bigger teams but aggressively crashes the paint to out-rebound them.

That tenacity was the difference Tuesday night.

Junior guard Albert Serrano stepped to the free throw line in overtime with St. Joe’s, No. 15 in the NJ.com Top 20, leading No. 8 Don Bosco Prep by a point and 11.8 seconds on the clock. He hit the first free throw but his second rimmed out.

Six-foot guard Daniel Lans crashed the boards and knocked the ball loose from two Bosco defenders. Serrano grabbed the rebound and banked it in two ice the 66-62 victory at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale.

“I knew that this was going to be a tough game,” Serrano, who finished with 14 points and seven boards, said. “We came out and played our hearts out. We stayed focused, we rebounded and we got the win.”
